Since the start of the pandemic three years ago, the demand for secure electronic credentials that respect user privacy and machines can automatically verify has increased significantly. Consequently, governments have begun to harness the potential of Verifiable Credentials (VC) and electronic attestation of attributes (AEE).

The W3C standard, which places the credential holder at the center of the experience, is similar to physical credentials. Users can store their verifiable credentials in their digital wallets and show them to anyone, anywhere, without requiring permission from the credential issuer. This decentralized approach allows users to manage and disclose their information selectively, significantly improving privacy protection.

In this post we mention two use cases of verifiable credentials carried out in two events: EmpoderaLIVE and VIDpartners 2023.

Issuance of access accreditations at the EmpoderaLIVE event

Last month, the EmpoderaLIVE from Cibervoluntarios took place, where IVIS and Peakway, partners of Validated ID and founders of Werify, participated and launched the accreditation in a self-sovereign verifiable credential format through the use of Werify and VIDwallet.

Issuance and verification of accreditations and credentials

This event brought together global leaders in AI, blockchain, robotics, digital rights, open data, and privacy in the City of Malaga to present their vision, advances, and recommendations in social and civic technology to continue advancing citizen digital sovereignty.

VIDwallet and Werify

Cibervoluntarios launched its first SSI project to issue event access accreditations in the format of a self-managed verifiable credential, which had to be verified upon entry to the congress through VIDwallet and Werify. This pilot project was a complete success and allowed us to illustrate the Self-Managed Verifiable Credentials model on which the new European Digital Identity is based, which empowers citizens to self-manage their information.

VIDpartners 2023: verification of credentials to determine the eligibility for a prize.

On October 26th, VIDpartners 2023 was held by Validated ID and was attended by the entire partner network in Spain. During the event, a raffle was held among all partners who presented their verifiable credentials from VIDwallet. For this, Werify had two Werify Points to request and verify the credentials included in the drawing for an iPhone 15! Regarding the list generated by Werify, Validated ID delegated the random number of the prize winner to artificial intelligence or AI.

VIDwallet and WERIFY were used in both events

While VIDwallet can also focus on creating custom combinations of attributes, its primary function is to make it easier for users to store their data - driver's license, ID, passport, vaccination card - on their phone and in a secure way similar to physical IDs to identify people in face-to-face situations, such as during a police check, and also for authentication in online services.

VIDidentity and VIDwallet are, therefore, defined as services that allow users to store, provide, and manage identity data, credentials, and attributes linked to their identity for request and authentication purposes.

Werify
, on the other hand, is a high-performance no-code Credential Verification platform to apply the SSI paradigm in real business application environments. Werify expands the range of uses that we give to VIDwallet today. In this case, it allows the holder to request several specific and different credentials in a single process through a series of verification and data capture rules that will enable managing attestations of attributes stored in VIDwallet that are more specific and relevant at certain times, such as age of majority, place of residence, single-parent family, etc. through Werify Points: Quick Verification Points operated by the verifiable credential (VC) holder.

Werify IVIS

If, for example, we want to access an event that only requires us to be of legal age and registered in a specific city, the union of VIDwallet with Werify allows us only to provide the information that is requested of us. We do not have to show all the information on our ID or passport, nor all the information we have on our registration form.

Ultimately, these two use cases demonstrate that, in today's digital world, verifiable credentials are increasingly important. They serve various purposes, such as verifying your identity, explaining your skills or qualifications, and validating your membership in a particular group or organization. By incorporating digital credentials into corporate processes, you can differentiate yourself from the competition and create more straightforward and agile identification processes.
